On 6 May 2026, GUILAB SA (La Guinéenne de Large Bande) and Medusa Submarine Cable System officially signed the Construction and Maintenance Agreement (C&MA) for the landing of the planned Medusa Africa submarine cable in Conakry (the capital). This will be the second submarine cable to land in Guinea, following the ACE cable which entered service in 2012. According to a company press release, GUILAB will as the landing party oversee the management, operation and maintenance of the infrastructure on Guinean territory for a period of 25 years, ensuring the long-term sustainability of this strategic investment for Guinea. The signing of the C&MA triggers the launch of marine surveys and the operational preparation for the cable landing in Conakry.
Previously in March 2025, AFR-IX Telecom announced that it had secured new funding from the European Commission to support the development of the Medusa Africa submarine cable system project (see Gabon: Medusa Africa Secures Funding To Extend Submarine Cable To West Africa, Signs C&MA With ACE Gabon To Land Cable In Port Gentil). This project lays the groundwork for a dedicated African connectivity subsystem within the overall Medusa Submarine Cable System, which includes building a Branching Unit in the Atlantic facing Africa, and the marine survey from that Branching Unit to Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and countries along the West coast of Africa up to DRC, in order to deploy in the future, a 24 fiber pair submarine cable. Medusa Africa also then announced in March 2025 that it had signed a Construction and Maintenance Agreement (C&MA) with ACE Gabon to land the Medusa submarine cable in Port-Gentil, Gabon.
