On 13 December 2018, Cabo Verde Telecom (CV Telecom) and EllaLink signed a contract for the implementation of the 6,000-km EllaLink submarine cable which will run from Brazil (Praia Grande and Fortaleza) to Portugal (Sines) via Cape Verde (Praia) and Madeira. The EllaLink cable will have a design capacity of 72 Tbps and is scheduled to be Ready for Service in 2020. Previously, in June 2018 CV Telecom and EllaLink signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the new cable system. According to a company press release, EllaLink said that the alliance with CV Telecom, alongside existing agreements and support from EllaLink’s equity sponsor Marguerite II, will enable commencement of implementation activities for the project.

Cape Verde is currently served by two international submarine cables: the Atlantis II cable which entered service in 2000, and WACS which entered service in May 2012 (see Africa: WACS Submarine Cable Enters Service). During October 2018, an agreement was also signed between CV Telecom and GUILAB (Guinéenne de Large Bande SA) for the ‘Cabo Amilcar Cabral’ cable which will run from Praia to Conakry (see Cape Verde: Agreement Signed for Cabo Amilcar Cabral Submarine Cable Connnecting Cape Verde And Guinea Conakry).

“Cabo Verde enjoys a unique geopolitical position in the Atlantic, equidistant between Europe and Latin America and close to Africa with a stable and solid commitment to order and democracy, all of which makes it the ideal hub for interconnecting these territories,” said Jose Luis Livramento, CEO of CVT in a company press release. “EllaLink has worked hand in hand with CVTelecom over the last two years to ensure Cabo Verde will benefit from this unique opportunity to secure and grow its highly competitive international connectivity. Investing in the EllaLink system will position Cabo Verde as a leader in the digital transformation of the region.”

“This agreement with Cabo Verde Telecom is fundamental to the project allowing us to move ahead and start to build the EllaLink submarine cable system,” said Alfonso Gajate Chairman of the EllaLink Board. “CVTelecom’s US$ 25 million investment in EllaLink marks an important strategic decision for the country which will aid the development of its social and economic vision.  Connecting Cabo Verde to Europe and Latin America with an initial capacity of 200Gbps will enable CVTelecom to create an Information Technology platform in the Atlantic.”
