On 6 September 2018, the South Atlantic Inter Link (SAIL) consortium announced that the marine installation of the 6,000-km submarine cable crossing the southern Atlantic ocean from Kribi (Cameroon) to Fortaleza (Brazil) was completed on 4 September. Utilising 100G technology, the 4 fibre pair SAIL system will have an initial capacity of 32 Tbps. SAIL is a joint investment by China Unicom (with its wholly-owned subsidiary, China Unicom do Brasil Telecomunicacoes Ltda) and CAMTEL. Huawei Marine Networks was awarded the contract to build the Cameroon - Brazil Cable System (CBCS) in October 2015 (see Cameroon: Huawei Marine Awarded Contract For Cameroon – Brazil Cable System (CBCS)).
